"The attempt to infiltrate the laws of design for industrial production with the finds of abstract art has led to the creation of a new style."

- Georg Muche, in the Journal "Bauhaus," 1926

Art Deco

Art deco was eclectic in its sources of inspiration, mixing cubist, futurist, and constructivist elements with motifs from the past civilizations of Greece and Egypt. The aim was to beautify everything, from vacuum cleaners to skyscrapers, from exotic jewelry and clocks to luxury automobiles. In this it stands in marked contrast to many modernist movmements that railed against commercialization in art. At the same time, art deco, like the more austere Bauhaus style, tried to introduce aesthetics into everyday objects.
